Liverpool legend : United top four is not sure
Manchester United have already fallen off the pace in the Premier League this season and are currently nine points away from a top four spot.
Cup form has been United's saving grace so far having reached the EFL Cup quarter-finals and last night qualifying for the Europa League knockout stages with a 2-1 win over Zorya Luhansk.
Jose Mourinho has said United have been unlucky in the league but they already face a tall order if they are to claim a top four place.
Owen has seen enough of this current United side to suggest they are heading in the right direction under Mourinho but holds doubts over whether they will finish in a Champions League spot come the end of the season.
"Scholesy still thinks United can still get the third or fourth place in the Premier League to qualify for the champions league next season," Owen told BT Sport.
"They're leaving themselves a decent old gap and big up hill struggle already because their league form is just not great and their Europa League form has been very similar in patches.
They are a good team and have a very strong, deep squad at Manchester United now.
"I'd like to see a few more goals and put other teams to bed quicker than they do.
"Even though the results aren't far greater than what they had been under David Moyes and Louis van Gaal, I do look at this team and think they've got greater scope."
