Rooney breaks United goalscoring record in Europe

WAYNE ROONEY became Manchester United’s all-time top goalscorer in Europe with tonight’s strike against Feyenoord.

Rooney opened the scoring after 35 minutes with a neat dinked finish after he was slipped in by Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
There were suggestions of offside and a nudge on the defender, but the finish was not in question.
Rooney now has 39 European goals and moves ahead of Ruud van Nistelrooy who scored 38.

It was the 31-year-old’s first goal since the controversy over pictures of him looking worse for wear on England duty emerged.
It was just his third goal of the season and his first since the last Europa League tie against Fenerbahce.
Rooney is now just one behind Sir Bobby Charlton’s record of 249 club goals.

“It’s a fantastic achievement,” Paul Scholes said on BT Sport. “Everybody inside this club knows how special he’s been.
“To score that many goals, I’m sure Michael (Owen) will appreciate that, he’s broke the European record tonight.
“He’s closer to Bobby’s record and like I say the people in this club and people who played with him know him and know what a player he’s been for this club and to score that amount of goals is a great achievement.”
